Course Registration

As an individualized major you will be registering for courses in a variety of departments and schools or colleges within the University. It is important that you understand the registration policies of the schools/colleges and departments in which you wish to take courses. Some schools/colleges may restrict access to certain courses for students from other programs. For example, at the School of Business, only the Business Administration program (BADM) automatically opens the seats in its courses to undergraduates from other schools and colleges. Students wishing to take other School of Business courses must seek permission from the instructor; only some School of Business instructors and some departments are likely to offer seats to qualified IMJRs. In other cases, programs may impose a GPA prerequisite. For example, students wishing to take courses in the Kinesiology department at the Neag School of Education must have a GPA of 2.7. In addition, most departments give first priority to their own majors at course registration time.

Don’t let these rules and regulations discourage you! If you are well-informed, organized, and persistent, you will be able to register successfully for the courses you wish to take. The IISP office can provide you with general information about registration procedures for the departments and programs most relevant to your IMJR. But you will have to do some footwork!

Advice for Registering for Fall 2008 Courses

Please follow our general advice as outlined below. Check if there are places available in your proposed course: for Storrs courses see http://137.99.109.21/FallStorrs/classes.htm. Remember that you will have access to PeopleSoft registration again from July 9, 2008 after first year and transfer student orientation is over. At that stage all reserve caps (e.g. for majors) will be lifted for any remaining seats in many classes.

Advice for Registering for Spring 2009 Courses

General Advice on Course Registration and Permission Numbers
Registering for classes can be a challenging endeavor, especially when it becomes necessary to obtain a permission number for a course you would like to take. Below are some helpful tips regarding the process of receiving a permission number.

* * Check in advance if the courses that you want to take are being offered: see http://137.99.109.21/SpringStorrs/classes.htm for an up-to-date list. If a course has any unreserved seats, try to register via PeopleSoft before you contact a professor or a department office about over-enrollment and permission numbers. See the notes below regarding departmental protocols; they may alter your understanding of who the right person is and what the right approach might be.

* * If you do need to request a permission number, prepare your case. There are lots of students on this campus with good reasons to request seats in popular courses. As IMJR students, you have some very good reasons why your particular case is a strong one. Rehearse those reasons. Be prepared to state them in an email (politely, coherently, and grammatically correctly) or in person (ditto) to the correct person.

* * If permission numbers are issued by the instructor, then e-mailing the professor is often the most efficient way to begin the process; however, because professors receive dozens of such requests, it may be more beneficial to go to the professor's office hours and speak with him/her in person. Often, professors would like you to come to their class on the first day and speak with them. The possibility of students dropping the class is great in the first week of school, so this provides a good opportunity to get a permission number.

* * Certain departments, such as Human Development and Family Studies and Economics, require that the student fill out a permission number request form. It is important to follow the protocol of the respective department. See the more detailed department-specific information below.

* * In general, be politely persistent and follow-up; there are only a limited amount of permission numbers!

Remember:
Just because you are an IMJR, you are not excused from any course prerequisites! Make sure that you have completed course prerequisites before you attempt to register for courses.

Departmental Protocols for Obtaining Permission Numbers

BADM-
Try to register via PeopleSoft and if you cannot, contact the School of Business advising office (Room 121) for a permission number request form. (After registration, this may be available on line at http://www.business.uconn.edu/forms/Bachelors/permissionnumberrequestform.htm ). File the form asap so that you have a reasonable chance at getting a permission number for the courses of your choice. See Guidelines note on inclusion of BADM courses in your IMJR.

COMM-
All COMM courses are reserved for majors. In order to obtain a permission number for a COMM course you will need to contact Susan Kiss at 6-2628 or susan.kiss@uconn.edu. You will only be eligible for consideration for a permission number under this system if you have the relevant COMM course on your approved plan of study and have supplied the IMJR Program Office of your intention to register for the course when such information was requested by the IISP office two weeks before the start of registration.

ECON-
You may only register for courses for which you have completed the prerequisites. Try to register for your approved courses via PeopleSoft during your registration appointment. If you are unable to register for a course for which you think you are qualified, contact Marjorie Aston via e-mail (marjorie.aston@uconn.edu). State that you are an IMJR. She will pass your request on to the instructor. Note that this process will not guarantee access to the course if there are too many qualified students chasing too few places, but it will put your request into the appropriate line.

EKIN-
In general, you will not be able to register for EKIN classes through PeopleSoft because places are restricted in PeopleSoft to EKIN majors. However, students with approved EKIN courses on their plans of study (usually only in the sport management area) should contact the course’s professor and request a permission number. Make sure to say that you are an individualized major! See Guidelines note on inclusion of EKIN courses in your IMJR.

HDFS-
Attempt to register via PeopleSoft and if you cannot, fill out an over-enrollment form online at the HDFS site (contact the Advising Center in person if you have difficulties finding or using the online over-enrollment form). On that form, indicate that you are an IMJR student.

INTD 4600W, the capstone course, or INTD 4697W, the capstone thesis -
To register for the capstone course, INTD 4600W, you must obtain a permission number from Anabel Perez in the IISP office.
To register for INTD 4697W you must fill out an Independent Study Authorization form. This form is available in the Registrar’s Office and in the IISP office, or online. Your thesis supervisor is the instructor and must sign on the instructor line. Dr. Lamb or your primary IMJR advisor must sign the advisor line. Dr. Lamb signs the Dept. Head line.

JOUR-
Contact Patricia Bukowski in the JOUR office to get a permission number. Only those students who submitted their course requests to the IISP office will be given a permission number. The permission number you will be given is valid ONLY for one day. See Guidelines note on inclusion of JOUR courses in your IMJR.

POLS –
Try to register via PeopleSoft. If you cannot, contact Instructor for permission number. A few IMJR seats have been reserved in some courses (POLS 2072QC, 3418, 3442, 3817, 3802, 3827).

SOCI -- Try to enroll via PeopleSoft during your designated appointment time. If you are unable to do so, please fill in a permission number request form at the Sociology Department website: http://sociology.uconn.edu/. Please follow the directions carefully and submit your request during the designated time period. Please indicate that you need this course for your Individualized Major. Note that this process will not guarantee access to the course if there are too many qualified students chasing too few places, but it will put your request into the appropriate line.
